A Common Canine Disease
Parvovirus
Parvovirus (also referred to as "Parvo") is a highly contagious
and serious disease stemming from a virus that infects the
gastrointestinal systems of any aged dog. It can even cause
damage to the heart muscles in very young and unborn pups.
Some signs of infection are lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting,
fever and quite often, bloody diarrhea. Parvo acts quickly,
usually killing its victim within 48 to 72 hours after the onset of
clinical signs. Another symptom of Parvo is dehydration from
vomiting and diarrhea.
Common sense and vaccinations, are critical areas in keeping
your dog Parvo free. Hygiene is also important. Never allow your
dog to come in contact with the fecal matter of other dogs while
out for walks. Prompt and proper removal of waste matter is
another way to limit the spread of the Parvovirus!
